What is HMO insurance?

HMO or Health Maintenance Organization has a range of health insurance plans to offer to the U.S. population. In case of HMO, you will essentially get a PCP to take care of your personal healthcare requirements. In case you need a specialist, your HMO will cover your medical costs in case you choose one from in-network. However, in case your specialist is from out-of-network, HMO will not cover your medical costs. Also, your PCP cannot refer you to it.

How does HMO health insurance plan work?

Under HMO plans you can have benefits like:

Freedom of picking your primary care physician (PCP) within the health insurance plan’s network

In HMO health plan your health insurance provider will entail a primary care physician for you. You have the liberty to pick your PCP from the list of physicians in your network of the plan. However, you will not receive any coverage in case you have not chosen healthcare from in-network. Moreover, for all further health care requirements, it is only through the PCP and his/her reference you can go for specialist consultation.

Condition necessary to become HMO enrollee

You must have a Primary Care Physician (PCP) from within your locally available health coverage service. With HMO, you can only pick a physician from in-network for your consulting. In case you need a specialist, your PCP has to recommend the physician for you to be able to use the benefits HMO plans. All the care you receive will be coordinated through your PCP. If the PCP is not skilled with medial facilities you require, make sure you get a proper replacement, as this an entirely in-network health insurance plan. You will most likely not get an out-of-network care, as that is an exclusive option in case of emergency.
