It’s important because you want to get off to a great start. You want to hit the ground running if you will in the right direction. And so I want to share just a few of the things that you should be considering.
We have the privilege of being able, from time to time, to talk to and coach couples who are just starting out on their marriage journey. Along with the things that are important to healthy relationships, things like communication and intimacy building, e are some things that fall under the umbrella of what I like to call logistics. Here are a few of those things:
Where will you live?
What are you doing about housing? Where are you going to live? Are you moving into one person’s house or the other person’s house? Are you leaving both homes?
Are you starting fresh with buying a home, with renting? What is the housing situation going to be and what’s the gameplay for securing it? If you own property already, what are you doing with that property? How is that property going to be managed and who’ll be responsible for it? All of these things need to be addressed (preferably before you get married).
What will your family dynamics be?
Are you going to start a family? If so, when are you going to start a family? Do you already have children? Is this a blended situation and is there a coparenting scenario that comes into play as a result of that?
You need to have the conversations around family and the family dynamics. It is important to map out your vision for family and the family construct. Or, if it’s a blended family, how will you blend successfully? That’s something you should be preparing for as it relates to how you’re going to hit the ground running in your first year of marriage.
What is your current financial outlook?
What’s the debt to income ratio? What financial obligations are you walking into as you partner together Are there things that you are going to have to take care of? Are there investments that need to be managed/transferred? Are there previous commitments from a debt perspective? It is imperative that you have these kinds of conversations as well.
All of these things fall under the umbrella of logistics. Additional questions include, whose name is the car going to be in? What about car insurance? What about health insurance?
Speaking of health insurance, I’d like to present to some, and introduce to others, a phenomenal company by the name of TrueCoverage.
TrueCoverage is the leading specialist in affordable health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, and has expertise in the special enrollment process. Many of the things that I’ve covered in this article – changes in family, changes in housing etc., are all the kinds of things that qualify you in their open enrollment period. Qualifiers include getting married, losing health coverage, recently relocating, being released from prison, starting a family, adopting a child, etc. All of these are things that TrueCoverage can help you with as it relates to providing the policy that’s right for your needs.
You can go to their website, fill out some information, answer a few questions and be guided to the right plan that’s perfect for your needs. You also have the option of speaking to an agent about those things as well.
So, as you’re going through the process of preparing for the first year of marriage and addressing these logistical items, when you get to health insurance, make sure that TrueCoverage is the first place you look.
