Exploring Affordable Health Coverage in Tennessee

You can look for cheap health insurance in Tennessee. But as we all know, the policies with the lowest monthly payments (your insurance Premium) may not be your best option.

The REAL price of health coverage depends on many variables. Deductibles and copays increase costs and Tax relief on your premiums, state insurance subsidies and discounts on your medical supplies can LOWER your medical expenses. A premium might look high at first, but the total amount you spend on medical services could be much lower!

If you qualify for Medicare, you should explore the Medicare add-on plans.   Tennessee has many options. About 19% of the population has enrolled in Medicare, but of those, only one third participate in a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage and Medicare supplemental plans could save you a LOT of money.

10 Health Services Mandated for all ACA-Compliant Plans

Before the Affordable Care Act, insurers could refuse to cover various health benefits, resulting in overwhelming debt for many.

The ACA fixed those loopholes and mandated that all ACA-qualifying plans include these coverages:

The Coronavirus Pandemic, COVID-19 Testing, and the FFCRA

COVID-19 is the hot topic health insurance issue in Tennessee. If you lose your health insurance due to COVID-19 or your employer closed because of the Coronavirus, testing is available at no charge. The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) passed in March 2020, ensures that everyone can receive COVID-19 testing.

Key Details about Health Insurance in Tennessee

Tennessee is falling behind many other States regarding consumer protection from ‘surprise’ billing (see our blogs When is a surprise not a surprise? When it’s a SHOCK! and Joe Biden – building on Medicare).

Tennessee also continues to allow non-ACA compliant Farm Bureau plans outside of the state’s regulatory structure; whilst less expensive than regular health insurance, their plans are not as robust and disadvantage those with pre-existing conditions.

Despite these advantages, Tennessee Health Insurance is more expensive than in many other states.

So it is even more important to make sure you’re getting the best advice.

Exploring the Health Insurance Marketplace in TN

Tennessee residents can sign up for health insurance using private insurance exchanges. These marketplaces offer more ACA-compliant plans than the state, which only deals with a handful of insurers.

As a private exchange, TrueCoverage is bound by the same rules as the Tennessee exchange but has access to hundreds of insurers.

With Health Insurance Exchanges, you gain access to ancillary insurance options like:

  • Dental,
  • Vision,
  • Accidental Death,
  • Critical Illness,

Tennessee utilizes a federally facilitated health insurance exchange. It does not regulate short-term health insurance plans. They are a useful option in some circumstances. These plans are NOT bound by the Affordable Care Act that mandates the 10 essential health benefits. Furthermore, they are NOT eligible for premium tax relief.

Tennessee is also a party to the Texas-led attempt to invalidate the ACA. The case is still before the courts and will almost certainly not affect the health insurance plans for 2021.

Did You Know?

Named (possibly – no one’s sure) after the Native American villages Tanasi (meaning “meeting place”) or Tanasqui (recorded in 1597 by explorer Captain Juan Pardo), the Volunteer State became the 16th state in 1796.

Fun fact

You can’t go far without recognizing Tennessee’s amazing musical heritage (just think Nashville as the country music capital of the world). Not only is Graceland, Elvis’s Memphis home, the second most visited home in the U.S. after the White House, but The Grand Old Opry, broadcasting every weekend since 1925, is the longest running live radio program in the world.
